Zahra has lived here in District 1 for over ten years. She has a Masters Degree in English Literature from Loyola University Chicago, and she is a writer, the co-founder of the I Speak for Myself book series, a professor of English at Elgin Community College, a Muslim, and a mother.
Zahra is very active in her community, both at her local mosque and at her children’s school. Zahra has lived in both Egypt and in Thailand, and she was invited by the US State Dept to travel to Thailand and Cambodia and engage in cross cultural dialogue there.
Zahra is running for a seat on the DuPage County Board in District 1 because there needs to be more diverse representation at all levels of government. Of the 18 people on the County Board, 1 is a Democrat, only 4 are women, and ZERO are minorities.
If you live in DuPage County, the people elected to the County Board affect your life. The scope of the County Board is pervasive- they control health and human services, transportation, taxes, parks, water, environment, wages, and more. The more we learn about the County Board, the more we realize that unless we actively try to get a seat at this table, Muslim communities like ours will not be represented fairly. We make up a large percentage of the population of DuPage County. Our leadership should reflect this!
Zahra doesn’t have unlimited resources, but she does have kindness, empathy, common sense, and a lot of determination. We deserve these qualities in our leaders.
